2017 Snippets and Highlights!

Hello there you lit lights! Today i’m going to be giving you a bit of a year-in-review type post, just showing some highlights from 2017 on the blog. I know this isn’t really an announcementMost of them aren’t even really highlights, just fun snippets from the past for us to look back on.

January:

The most popular post in January was Staruday by Maz.

Victoria made her debut on the blog in her first ever post.

We hit 300 followers the day before the new year.

Jamie announced The Nerd and His Brother!

And I finally beat Sans.

February:

The most popular post in February was Hello There You Contest by Riley.

Jordan joined the blog with a first post hacked by Victoria!

Victoria opened up with a song from her past.

We learned about Ribbon Worms with Maz.

March:

Now days all Riley does is take time to create quality music and expand his roster of authors to include friends that also create quality posts.

Who else longs for the days where Riley would post MineCraft updates and origami pictures. Total Drama: Rileys Backpack Style fell by the wayside as new authors joined and Free Lunch, Poetry, and *shudders* Life and You became prevalent. Moo and other cow noises stopped as like begging started as rileys backpack fell from glory.

And who knows where it ends? One day it might just become Riley’s Backpack (with apostrophe).

So where this decline start?

I think the beginning of the end was when James Blonde joined the blog. Almost immediately he began to engage with readers, start side, projects, and try to out pace the original author Riley. As more authors filled out the roster the posts have gotten better written and better reviewed.

When we used to come to rileysbackpack.wordpress.com we didn’t want some obnoxious podcast logo, some great music and podcasts, and a commercialized .com. We wanted the counter-culture minecraft, origami, and dum cheese we all knew and loved with a .wordpress proudly in the middle!

.In conclusion, I don’t read rileys backpack anymore and you shouldn’t either.

Out with the news, in with the mOOOOOs.

So I’ve been on kind of a satire writing kick and I don’t know if people actually get/want it. So comment if you would like mixed in satirical, parody, or sketch-like posts. Or maybe you would prefer just my schedule. Just comment.

Fav Fiv-Marvel Movies

Super special announcement is rescheduled for Friday, so sorry. Until then, enjoy!

Welcome to the first in a long line of Fav Fiv (or 4,3,2,1).

The title is pretty self explanatory but here I am writing this paragraph so it will be explained. Basically it is my Favorite 5 of somethings but if I have less than 5 then 4,3,2, or 1. Or more than 5, so the title would more accurately Favorites but I wanted a catchy rhyme so I shortened favorite and took off the e in Five. Fav Fiv begins now with my top 5 Marvel Movies.

5. Ant Man

 

This movie was amazing. It was not hyped up as much as other marvel movies, and featured a less well-known super hero. But all the cast worked perfectly together and created a fresh new story that renewed the ‘funny’ in the MCU. I especially liked the ‘bite-sized’ fight at the very end. It mixed suspense and comedy perfectly while poking fun at the ‘no-stakes’ criticism of Marvel movies. One bad thing that this and Guardians planted the seeds for is too much comedy that actually worsens the lack of stakes in Marvel Movies. But I’ll talk about this in detail soon.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians has the same vibe of Ant Man in that it has a relatively unknown main slate of characters. Again the cast shined and the story was fresh. I thought the transition to infinity stones/ infinity war setup was very well done by hinting the plot out and not dumping too much information on watchers. Again though Guardians (and especially vol.2)  cut the drama to a point of just a no-consequences comedy. This makes me worried for how the now serious Avengers conflict (plus Spiderman who has his own thing) is going to meet the slapstick Guardians of the Galaxy in a balanced Infinity War. But I reserve judgment until I have watched the movie. Overall though, great movie.

3. Iron Man

Perhaps a surprise to you, but hear me out. Iron Man is commonly ranked at spots 1 and 2 because it started them all and people were sentimentally attached. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Iron Man. But because of the weird order I watched the MCU movies in (Avengers, Captain America, Ultron, Ant Man, then Iron Man) I don’t feel the sentimentality and I think I view it as a movie and not as a feeling. I don’t really have a reason for it to be low, just for the other two to be higher!

 

 

2. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Hands down the best Spider Man movie. Marvel finally got their Spidey back and boy am I glad. After a soft reboot in Captain America: Civil War Tom Holland’s take on a web-slinger origin story is astoundingly good. I keep thinking that if I went over it critically I won’t like it, but I just love it. The only complaint I have is the anti-climactic ending but I feel like that fight just shows that Peter Parker isn’t a major player yet. Spider Man is THE BEST superhero and I felt like this movie finally did him justice. They incorporated Tony Stark brilliantly in a couple of ways. 1) Adding Tony as a fatherly figure gave the story more shape, 2) It showed us how much RDJ recording his voice can impact a movie and 3) it shifted Iron Man’s character in a vital way. It allowed a broken Iron Man after Civil War to become a father figure/ mentor that shifts him out of the crucial role he has been since the beginning. This, I think, is setting up more tragedy for Peter and everyone when Iron Man goes down for good in Infinity War. That’s just my theory but with the role Tony took in this movie it is becoming a distinct possibility. And don’t even get me started about the timeline.

And 1. Avengers

 

 

This may not surprise anyone, but Avengers is my favorite Marvel Movie. The culmination of all the previous setup is a great example of ‘the sum is bigger than the parts’. An epic fight, some epic lines, an epic setup for Infinity War, and an epic positioning of the Marvel Movies to continue.

For All Musicians on WordPress

Hello there you ridiculously expensive guitar amps. Tonight I will be revisiting an idea that was brought up a while ago while I was talking to sfcamster. The idea in question was us thinking that we could possibly get a collaboration going between all the bloggers on WordPress who are also musicians to create an album between us all. Everyone who writes on Rileys Backpack is musical in one way or another, and while I can’t guarantee the participation of other peeps here, I can say that I would like to do this.

There’s also the problem of how we would go about publishing it, if it ever gets to a publishing stage. Would someone create a Soundcloud for the WordPress musicians? Would we all be part of one big band? The other possibility is we just take a name and have a group of revolving people, so that we could pass on the mantle one day if we didn’t want to do it anymore. If you have any idea on a way to make all these things come together for a good release, comment your thoughts below.

Just to gauge the number of people who would be interested in participating, leave a comment if you want this idea to come to reality and to be a part of it!

With a good number of volunteers, we can set up maybe another website for this or something? I don’t know..

If enough people comment saying they want to take part, I’ll write a follow up post with a little more details based on what was discussed in these comments, and we could take a more solid step towards making this real.

In the end though, Luca was a great woman and then I watched it she was a good great and good movie to me but she was is the only very true story I was like I had to a walk and then they were happy.

If you are very confused right now, let me explain. Basically apple has this thing on iMessage where it predicts what you are going to say. By typing in a few key words (Luca, pizza) and using predictive I texted this book. Victoria has an LG and they have something where if you drag your finger across the keyboard it makes works and thus her contributions.

As I sat down to write this post, I kept trying to talk about my day, so I’m going to publish LAY tomorrow. So, if you have a question for me, leave it in the comments!!!

Twenty One Pilots Concert

Hello there you Trees. Last night was the concert that I have been waiting a very, very long time to go to. If you are a long time reader of the blog, you probably remember the two posts I’ve made talking about my favorite bands.

If you haven’t read those, you can see them both here.

I’m writing this on the drive back from Memphis, listening to some peaceful music 

My mom and I got there at around 7:30, and the actual concert started around 9:10. There were two opening performers, Judah and the Lion, and Jon Bellion, who both did well.

Tyler opened with Fairly Local, and a huge Blurryface talking. The show was amazing, and I failed to get a good picture from the top of the venue, but Jordan got a good one of Josh while he was on the crowd.

There were thousands of people there 0.0

Anyways, they played a lot of my favorite songs (because every song of theirs is my favorite), including:

It was the best concert i’ve ever been to 😀

I was able to buy a beanie and socks with the merch money that Saint Iv gave me.

Overall, even if it was a $20 pair of socks and $35 beanie (THE MARKUP ON THESE MUST BE INSANE), i’m glad I got them.

The concert was an amazing experience, and I’ve already started saving for my ticket for the tour that will follow their new album.

St. Paul and The Broken Bones and Converse

Hello there you anonymous pumpkin dances (Hello there submitted by ArmyOfLamps)

Today I went to a local radio station (Lightning 100) and saw a mini-concert by, as the title suggests, St. Paul and The Broken Bones. There was a trumpeter there as well who was fantastic. The whole band did amazing, and the singer’s voice was incredible.

In other news, for the past few days I’ve been searching the internet for a pair of Gorillaz Converse in my size. Unfortunately, they came out almost 5 years ago and there are barely any left in ANY size. So I was thinking I could attempt to draw something cool on the next pair of Converse I get, which will be white so I can add my own decorations. On them, I want to have a TØP symbol, 2D’s head, and some other stuff. But my worry is that whenever it rains, the designs will just fade away. The solution to that is to use permanent marker, but that means that I’ll have to find someone who can draw something perfectly first time in permanent marker ON A SHOE.

Also I’m interested in the piano, so I’m gonna go bug Brendan to teach me.

Dictionary Taboo:
