Hello there you conversing cobblers. Today is Tuesday, which means that it’s time for another Free Lunch. If it’s been so long that you’ve forgotten what this series is, that’s alright. I just type for five minutes about whatever I want to and then publish it with only light editing.
I haven’t posted in almost two months, and I can finally have a good reason. Hume Fogg is pretty academically challenging so I have been using most of my free time to just relax instead of writing. I was spurred back to this by remembering when the author of one of my favorite books said my review was written eloquently. That’s a really fond memory, and I’d like to make more in the future, so here I am.
I’ve gotten a lot better at Trumpet in the last few months, thanks to being in two after-school clubs and practicing at least an hour at home every day. In Jazz Combos (one of the clubs) I’ve been developing my improvising skills, and I am a lot better at soloing than I was when I started. I think I’ve made more progress in the last 2 or 3 months than I did last year. I haven’t been working on my piano songs that much, but I did buy a melodica, which is fun to take around and play with. Speaking of my melodica, here are some very short musical ideas that I put on Soundcloud using it. They don’t make a lot of sense unless you read the description of each song, (click the title once it’s playing) which offer some insight on what I was trying to do. I think that trying out concepts from other mediums in music is super fun, which you can see in Hero’s Ringtone.
I got a raise at my job and made all A’s and high B’s in the first quarter of the school year, so my life is pretty good everywhere else too. I’ve generally been happier at high school than I was at middle school so far. What’s been going on in you guys’ lives?
That’s all the time I’ve got for you today, I’ll see you in the next post.
Hello there you remind me of the rainy days. Today is Friday which means it’s time for another Free Lunch! If you don’t know what Free Lunch is, I just type for five minutes about whatever I want to talk about. It seems like this is the only type of post I do these days, but I plan to release a book review sometime in the next month.
Since the last Free Lunch, I’ve gotten a bit more settled into my classes, and boy do I have some stuff to say! For the first time ever, I’m behind the class in Math (I had a very confusing teacher last year), so I really need to study on something like KhanAcademy. In Band, I am significantly worse than all the other Trumpets except for my friend who came with me from my middle school, and it feels weird going from like top 10 in the whole band program to one of the worst in my class. I haven’t had any particularly challenging work yet, but I’m trying to stay diligent and not fall behind on anything to prepare for whatever lies ahead. I’ve been going to the library after school every day to do my homework and play video games with my friends, which is pretty fun.
But here’s the fun part! Today my friend Iverson and I were walking around downtown, and we saw this guy singing old jazz songs with a microphone on a street corner (Fly Me to the Moon, What a Wonderful World). We both had our instruments, so we walked over and talked to him for a bit. I tried to play Trumpet along with his singing on Fly Me to the Moon, but I did really poorly so I stopped halfway through. However, Iverson took out his clarinet and we started playing a song we learned last year in band, “Park Street Celebration”.
And then someone actually left a five dollar bill in my trumpet case! I split it with Iverson, and the dude on the corner said that there were these two boys who were about my age who busked on street corners like that for a couple hours, and would pull in hundreds of dollars! This is the first time I’ve ever seen music as something you can make money like that so easily. I’ve never really thought of hobbies as careers unless you put some serious dedication into it, but thinking that I can be good at an instrument and make money without going to college or having connections is interesting.
I typed for about ten minutes instead of five, I hope that’s alright with all of you diehard Free Lunch fans.
Thanks for reading all the way down to the very bottom of this post!
Hello there you cardboard cats. I wish I could give you a good reason for why I haven’t been posting, but all I can tell you is that I was burned out and lacked the motivation. I’m posting now because a song reminded me of sitting on the bus, listening to piano music and writing Free Lunch. So that’s what I’m doing now. If you don’t know what Free Lunch is, I just type for five minutes about whatever I feel like writing about.
Starting at 4:52.
I’d like to start off by apologizing for not posting all the neat stuff we had planned for this year or posting at all. However, in the mean time a lot has happened. I’ve gotten noticeably better at all of my instruments except Piano, which is difficult to find the time to practice for. Tomorrow I have a Trumpet audition that determines my placement at my high school next year. I’m hoping for Wind Ensemble, but that’s kind of a long shot. The piece I’m playing is pretty difficult, but I’ve got all my scales down. I’m really hoping the sightreading parts aren’t too trying.
I’ve been playing a lot of Super Smash Bros recently on my 2DS with my friends. I’m about second best in the group, and I’m maining Sonic and Toon Link. I’m also a bit into Earthbound, and I’m learning Smiles and Tears on the Guitar.
That’s all the writing I have time for, so thanks for reading all the way down to the bottom of this post! And thanks to Victoria and mr. bubbles for continuing to post in my absence. And thanks to you readers for sticking around!
Hello there you mini-helicopters. Today I gloriously return to the blogosphere, in the first of a flurry of upcoming posts from everybody. It’s Friday, which means it’s time for another Free Lunch. If you don’t know what Free Lunch is, I just get on either my laptop or phone and write for five minutes without stopping.
Starting at 7:50.
I haven’t made one of these in a while, so I should have a lot to talk about. But unfortunately, I really don’t. I don’t think I’ve made it through many Free Lunches without stopping to think for a second, and this won’t be the exception. Since the last time I posted, we had my band concert, which was not very good. Here, vote on whether or not I should upload it.
I have also been messing around with the Musescore notation program and I made this song. I would appreciate it a lot if you’d tell me how I could improve it and whether or not you like it.
Now is the time I take a break from writing briefly to give you this sentence. Recently I’ve been getting into Jack Johnson and ambient music, which are totally worlds apart but I really like both of them. If you don’t know who Jack Johnson is, he’s the dude who wrote Upside Down from the Curious George movie, which is one of my favorite songs from my childhood.
I’m happy to tell you that there will be a lot of posts coming out from now until well into the New Year, expect something special to start on December 27th! Now I have nothing to say again. I’m having a hard time coming up with new lyrics for songs, but I’m sure it will pass eventually.
I’m out of time for today, thank you for reading all the way down to the bottom of this post!
Hello there you weeping guitars. Today is a Tuesday, which means it’s time for Free Lunch. More importantly though, today, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced his plan to repeal some of the regulations set in place when Obama was in office that help keep an open Internet.
Starting at 8:46.
Over the last few weeks, you’ve probably seen a big buzz around Net Neutrality, and for a good reason. Net Neutrality is what keeps big companies from charging you extra for going on websites that they oppose. To help understand that a little bit better, think of your electric company. You get a bill based on how much electricity you use, not what you use the electricity on. They won’t charge you more for playing an electric guitar than for operating a microwave. However, if FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s plan goes through, these regulations that stop your Internet Service Provider (ISP) from charging you more based on what websites you visit will disappear.
If you don’t understand how this is a big deal, take into consideration that your ISPs can block websites that are run by companies that they don’t like.
Not only can they block you from visiting certain websites, if these regulations are lifted, your ISP will also be able to charge you more money for visiting certain websites, or considerably slow down these websites that they go against.
This is very bad.
Luckily you can help by visiting this website and calling your local congress representative and telling them that you oppose the FCC Chairman’s plan and support an open and equal internet.
If you are a blogger, I recommend you write a post about this to spread the word to as many people as you can to try and save the internet.
Thanks for reading all the way down to the bottom of this post. Call your state’s congress representative.
Hello there you rainbow monkeys. Today is Tuesday which means it’s time for another Free Lunch. If you don’t know what that is, I just get on either my phone or laptop and type for 5 minutes legibly without stopping. I’m on my laptop this time so it will probably be a little bit longer than last time.
Starting at 9:07.
In the last few days I haven’t really been working on much, save an interesting intro I made for Megalovania and a guitar riff. I also realized that I need to buckle down and finish learning Having Lived if I want to be able to release it the day that Finding Paradise comes out. It’s supposed to be near the end of the year, so I have quite a bit of time, but all the time in the world makes no difference if I don’t practice. I’m going to ask my talented friend to help me with it tomorrow morning.
If you didn’t know, a remix of a song I made came out yesterday and you can listen to it here, thanks in advance.
Right now I’m listening to a CD titled Romantic Symphonies. I got it at Goodwill and it’s a pretty good soundtrack for studying and writing stuff.
In other news, I’m really excited because it seems like I’m going to get a Nintendo Switch for Christmas from the same friend who I’m going to request help from tomorrow. This is big because Nintendo Switches are super cool and I’ll get to play Super Mario Odyssey.
Be on the lookout for a post by Jamie in the next few days, a review of Thor Ragnarok. I don’t really have much else to say and I still have a whole minute left to type. I was reading an interesting limerick on Twitter earlier today, I’ll link it here so you can read it and I don’t have to keep writing.
My new dad joke:
There once was a man from Peru Whose limericks stopped at line two.
Hello there you nostalgia for a time you weren’t borns. It’s Friday so that means it’s time for another Free Lunch. If you don’t know what that means, I just get on either my laptop or phone and type for 5 minutes. My phone is still out of commission so it’s laptop today! Unfortunately I can’t really think of anything to say right now so this might be a dull Free Lunch regardless.
Starting at 8:02.
Earlier today Stranger Things Season 2 and Super Mario Odyssey came out, so people around me were super excited. I’m going to watch a bunch of Stranger Things tomorrow with my family, and watch the finale with Jamie and a friend on Halloween, but I probably won’t play the new Mario game for a long time. Fortunately i’m not too invested in Mario.. (sorry Jamie and other big Mario fans)
In music news, i’ve been experimenting with a new melody and trying to expand off of it and make it a real song, but i’m having trouble with it. I have no idea if this is ever going to come out, or even less if i’m ever going to finish it..
I don’t really have much more to say. I’m struggling here. I guess I can talk about the two book reviews I have scheduled. Everybody don’t forget that on the Top Shelf Book Reviews you’re supposed to leave a comment and guess what the next book is going to be based on the hint. The next one comes out tomorrow, and it involves me reconsidering some of my earlier life choices, like picking up such a bad book.
I still have a whole minute left to tell you about one more thing. I noticed while listening to the Stranger Things Spotify playlist on your computer that if you go to a different thing while the playlist is on, a really awesome Stranger Things related AFK screen comes up, and I highly recommend you check it out.
My time is up, so thanks for reading all the way down to the bottom of this post. It turned out to be longer than I thought it would be, which is good.
A long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune.
Hello there you frunches. It’s Tuesday which means it’s time for another Free Lunch. If you don’t know what that means, I just get on either my laptop or phone (today it’s laptop because my phone bill isn’t paid) and type for 5 minutes without stopping about my life and stuff.
Starting at 5:48.
I got to do something really cool this weekend! I wanted to tell you in a sidenote on the book review this Saturday, but I decided to save it for the Free Lunch because I probably won’t have anything to talk about now except that and a few other things.
The thing I got to do that was really cool was play a Steinway piano! My library has a Steinway that’s just sitting there on the second floor, but it always has a bar locking it from being played while the keys cover is down. But on Saturday, the piano was open for two performers. There was an event going on in the library that day, and so they opened the piano so that some people could play it while the event was happening. The first woman came and played some classical music, which was pretty cool, and after she left, I played around with the piano a bit with my brother, because neither of us had played one before. A little bit after that, two guys came and played jazz with the piano and a saxophone that one brought. They played some really cool tunes and I recorded some on my phone, which I might put up later.
I also released a piano song on Sunday that you should listen to! Thanks in advance!
This Free Lunch was kinda short for one on the laptop, sorry.
Thanks for reading all the way down to the bottom of this post 😀
We did it. Fifty. That’s a total of 250 minutes I will have spent typing these Free Lunches. Let’s take it from 245 to 250 now!
(Also sorry it’s coming out late I will explain in the Free Lunch)
Starting at 10:20.
The reason that this post is going to be out late-ish tonight is because:
1. I was at a party and didn’t have time to do number 2 because I wasn’t home.
2. I was making this!
(I know it’s not as good as the Blade Runner 2049 one)
I hope you like it, i’m really happy that i’ve gotten the series this far! I don’t really have any special announcements for this occasion, but be excited anyways! Whenever you feel down just remember that you actually have five senses! Look away from the screen for a second and go and smell some food and taste it and notice the details of everything around you. This always helps me.
Tomorrow’s Top Shelf Book Review won’t be out as late as this post is, I can assure you of that. The post will be a review of Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements. I hope you guys like it!
In other news, the piano song that I decided to release will probably be out Sunday. I’m not sure what to name it so i’ll let you guys decide like the mantis shrimp one.
My times up on this very special Free Lunch! To 100!
I’m going to go ahead and make a promise that Free Lunch #100 will be ten minutes long!
Hello there you mellow fellows! I would like to go ahead and apologize for my extended absence from the blog, if I hadn’t have skipped all that time we already would have hit Free Lunch #50. However, I forgot the Friday and Saturday posts and we end up here. Anyways, here’s the usual spiel. It’s Tuesday which means it’s time for another Free Lunch! If you don’t know what that is, I just type for 5 minutes on either my laptop or phone. This time it’s on my laptop because I don’t want to use the data on my phone.
Starting at 5:41.
I’m happy to tell you that a new piano song will come out this Friday for the 50th Free Lunch! This is the song i’ve been working on for a while. In other news, while I was gone I got an amp for my Guitar from my dad and went to see Blade Runner 2049 with him. The amp works great and i’m glad now that I can make an electric guitar sound with my electric guitar. I really liked Blade Runner 2049. I had read online before watching the movie that it was slow, but I didn’t think so at all after watching it. The pacing was done well in my opinion, and the action was great too. Like Legendary randomness said in their review, all the shots were cinematic and the soundtrack was fantastic. The jarring 80’s synths really help to immerse you in the film.
The next post for Top Shelf Book Reviews will be Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements, which will come out this Saturday. I also have a poll for you here, just in case this idea is relevant yet.
I don’t have much time left, so i’ll leave you with this. I tried to play Chopin’s Winter Wind (intro of course) on cups, but it was really out of tune and sounded bad. I uploaded it anyways though, and you can now watch it!
Thanks for reading all the way down to the bottom of this post!
